The Boston Bombers (as seen on security camera footage just prior to the bombing) were said to have admired the Black Flag Movement of Khorasan.
For their part, the Umayyads in Damascus were uprooted root and stalk and their graves overturned and obliterated. Its more modern version looks forward to just such a renewed and more “legitimate Muslim Caliphate” and this seems to be exactly what seems to have been motivating at least the elder of these two brothers above today, despite their seeming upbringing in America and Americanization. And this goes for most Muslims too – and this of almost whatever genre. It is the “Religion”, whether real believers or not or whether practiced sincerely and not just superficially – which binds them and acts as the cohesive force even if practiced only superficially and however ‘Westernized’ they might seem.
However, for them, there is one overriding consideration and this even if unconscious and an issue Westerners are, for the most part, unaware of and that is that situations such as these are a matter of life and death . Where Westerners go, they have just not experienced situations of this kind since the late Middle Ages or before their own so-called “Enlightenment” – though Jews have, even in the Twentieth Century, and still are. The unhappy consequence of this is that most Muslims – even if they are or appear to be comparatively modern or extremely liberal (as even the Boston ones may have initially ‘appeared’) – are neither relieved of or absented from the effects of this proposition.
What Westerners and, for that matter, most non-Muslims of whatever culture are unaware of and cannot properly appreciate (though “Russians” might now appreciate this – Israelis are certainly coming to understand it and ‘Christian’ Arabs are beginning to feel its effects) is that in the abstract or ideal – and this does not just apply to the extreme, though it is generally only applied in that situation – apostasy from Islam is punishable by death .
This is the unacknowledged and deadly ‘third man’ in the room, as it were, that distinguishes the situation of most Muslims in their environments and Islam from other major modern religions people are familiar with; and this is not just a figment of one’s imagination. It is an actual known stricture, both in Islamic Law in its theoretical embodiment and actual practice as well as in, if you prefer, the Customs or Traditions of Islam; and this goes for Shi’ism as well as Sunnism –the former even more so. Moreover, every Muslim (Shi’ite or Sunni) is acutely aware of this, even if it is only a silent presence in the back of his or her mind and whether he or she is willing to admit awareness of it or not – and even if only ‘in the breach’, as it were.
Just as in the Western Middle Ages where ‘apostasy’ or seeming apostasy from 'Christianity' (regardless of its definition) was often punished in the most inhuman manner like
