MOOR

You want to show me something,

I assume. Because, on waking,

I find you’ve filled

the chambers of my heart

with an elemental longing;

that old beckoning, echoing,

like a yow throating: moor, moor.

So, I drag them upstream,

through childhood wood,

breaching into blue, metallic air,

heat-clamped grass, reed, ling.

Where curlew mew and the

cauldron stink of green bracken

is pure oxygen.

Then hillcrest.

Earth-mass moored to sky,

iron-cold, rough, quartz-chunk

gritstone. Sucking-mouth bog, wet,

black. Fine, sandy beach-like adder

track, through sharp, dark, bonsai heather.

Here, I have brought my children.
