Jo could tell that Maggie was ready to call it a day. They’d walked for an hour along the wharf, stopping to eat, then more walking. She told Antonio about some of her memories of Orlando, and Jo had never seen a more attentive listener. Well, except for the moments Antonio had glanced at her. Which had happened several times.

Now, they were heading back to the rental house. Maggie’s carefully coiffed hair was looking ragged, and new lines seemed to have appeared on her face.

“We can go to the estate for the afternoon,” Maggie said, “and help Stella sort through the art pieces.”

Antonio glanced over at Maggie, surprise in his gaze, echoing the same surprise that Jo felt. Maggie never seemed to slow down.

“Maggie,” Jo said, leaning forward in the convertible. “Why don’t you rest and spend time with Sadie? I’ll take the car over to the estate and help out for a few hours, then bring some dinner back. Tomorrow might be a busy day if the offer is accepted, and we have to go downtown to sign paperwork.”

Maggie opened her mouth, then closed it. Finally, she nodded, her eyes sparkling. “All right. Maybe you can ride with Antonio if he doesn’t mind bringing you back.”

“I don’t mind,” Antonio said at the same time that Jo said, “I’d prefer to drive.”

She ignored the jump in her pulse at his offer—she wasn’t quite ready for all that alone time with him, and never planned to be.

“It’s settled, then,” Maggie continued. “However you want to get there. I’ll keep Sadie company.”

Jo was pretty sure Maggie thought she’d pulled off a major matchmaking heist, but it was far from that. She needed Maggie to be healthy and rested. This was her project, not Jo’s.

Antonio’s gaze connected with Jo’s in the rearview mirror, and his lips curved. She glanced away, not wanting to know what he found so amusing. She could guess, and that was enough. She didn’t need to share secret smiles with a man who was too handsome for his own good. Or for her own good.

Antonio pulled into the driveway, then said, “Do you want to follow me over?” His brown eyes were warm today, and Jo nodded.

What was the harm in following over in Maggie’s car? At least Jo would have her own transportation and not have to be one-on-one with the man. “Let me check on the dog, then I’ll be out in a moment.” And freshen up.

She went into the house with Maggie.

Sadie was more than happy to bestow her energy upon Jo. “Be good for Maggie,” she said. “No whining or barking.”

Sadie’s ears drooped, which made Jo laugh.

“It’s nice to see you smiling and laughing,” Maggie said, reaching to scratch Sadie, putting the dog straight into ecstasy.

“Haven’t I been smiling and laughing?” Jo tried not to let Maggie’s comment sting. Had she been a boring traveling companion?

“Not as much as today,” Maggie said. “And I think I know who to thank.”

Jo suppressed a sigh. “Look, Maggie.
