Prayer for Rachel

You asked for prayer.

I went to the orchard,

closed my fingers around warm fruit,

twisted, pulled, and placed

Cortlands tenderly into the basket,

hefted and bore it home.

O God of heavenly powers, by the might of your command

you drive away from our bodies all sickness and all infirmity;

You asked for prayer.

I stood in my kitchen,

silver knife peeling crimson skin,

slicing thin wedges into blue bowl.

Two circles of supple dough

cradling apples in Pyrex pan.

Be present in your goodness with your servant,

that her weakness may be banished and her strength restored;

You asked for prayer. I made you pie,

autumn apple dredged in sugar,

fragrant with cinnamon,

essence of Moses’ holy oil,

nutmeg and clove to awaken the appetite.

and that, her health being renewed, she may bless your holy Name;

You asked for prayer.

I knelt before the oven door,

curved my cushioned hands

around the scorching dish,

lifted it up for you.

An offering. A doxology.

A pie.

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.*
