Chapter 13: The First Day

Misti woke a minute before her alarm. She lay still, listening to the stillness of the house. Even though she had been with her aunt and uncle for a short time, she was comfortable. This was the safest she had been in a long time. She had never really let herself think about that in the places she lived with her mother but she knew she always slept a little lighter, just in case. Misti pushed back the blankets and got up, silencing the alarm before it could do its job. She dressed in the clothes she had laid out the night before: a pair of darker jeans and a T-shirt with the Blackwood Coffee logo on it. She brushed and braided her hair before putting on makeup.

She quietly made her way down the stairs and fixed herself a small breakfast of cereal and one piece of toast. She was rinsing her bowl when Aunt Mary appeared.

“Good morning!”

“Morning!” They both spoke in hushed tones despite knowing that nothing short of a hurricane would wake Penny and her father right now.

It was thirty-five minutes after five when they pulled out of the driveway. The lights in town were flashing red and they only met one other car as they drove downtown. Aunt Mary pulled in front and smiled at Misti.

“I’m so proud of you, Misti.”

Misti glanced over at her, hand frozen on the handle of the SUV. No one had ever said those words to her before.

“You’ve handled this whole thing—your mother, the move, new place to live—with such grace. You’ve made friends, you got a job.” Aunt Mary looked at the coffee shop. “I don’t think I would have been able to do that.”

“You and Uncle Bill and Penny have all made it so I could.”

Aunt Mary’s eyes were shining. Although they were both morning people, it was too early for this sort of emotion.

“Have a good day! I’ll pick you up at 2:00?” Misti nodded and jumped out of the car, hurrying to the door. Abigail had to unlock it for her.

“Morning, morning, morning!” the manager sang to her. Misti wondered if she was related to her aunt. She took the morning person thing to a new level. “Are you ready for your first day?”

Misti nodded. She had always been a fast learner, and by the end of the day Abigail trusted her on the register and had started teaching her how to make a few drinks. The day itself went very quickly. The coffee shop had one “rush” of fifteen people. But of what Misti could tell; none of them were actually in a hurry. The customers looked to be mostly young mothers, babies strapped to their chests or in strollers. They all sat and chatted. Some were clearly gossiping about another woman who sat in the corner with a man that Misti took not to be her husband.

They always stopped talking when Misti came to check on them.

“You’re new?” one of them asked.
