CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

Archie Reid and Reinhard Diefenbach were sitting in Archie’s car, a 1947 Pontiac Streamliner Sedan Coupe, Burbank Green upper and Asbury Green lower. They were across the street from the Sheriff's Department in Independence. They watched a woman walk out of the office. She was thin, attractive, and confident in her stride.

Archie sat up in his seat. “That woman looks like my mother did before I left for the service,” he said.

“If that’s your mom, she’s the best looking fifty-year-old lady I’ve seen around.”

“It’s not my mother, but I think it is her sister, Lottie, who moved into my parent’s house in 1944.”

“Do you know her?”

“We’ve never met, but I would bet my last dollar that’s my aunt.”

“Do you want to go over and talk with her?”

“No, I’m not ready to let my mother know I’m in town. Let’s see if Jim Cobb comes out.”

Reinhard Diefenbach was getting a little antsy waiting for Archie to make a decision on who to talk to. Reinhard knew from long experience, pushing Archie Reid too much for a rushed decision never worked out well. As frustrated as the situation made Reinhard feel, he had to wait for Archie to make his own decision. Reinhard knew that Archie always made the right one.

The two didn’t need to wait long for Cobb to come out of his office. The Sheriff wasn’t rushed in his actions. He casually walked to his car, got in and started the brand new 318 cubic inch 8 barrel, 290 horse V-8 Plymouth, Police Pursuit vehicle, driving away from the parking lot.

Archie Reid and Reinhard Diefenbach watched in admiration. “That sure is one fucking sweet ride for a cop out here in the sticks,” Reinhard said, solemnly.

“The bad guys in the black hats ride fast out here.”
