The day after Easter dawned as bright and clear as Easter Sunday. Eliza could barely contain her excitement as she dressed in her new dress. She and Beck had decided to save their new dresses for the service at Pool Meadow where they would sing. After the huge open-air meeting, they would go to the Salvation Factory for food and a free-and-easy gathering.

The converts from Leicester spoke at the free-and-easy Easter afternoon, but Bramwell Booth preached at the Easter evening service. Having a famous person speak at the service only added to the excitement. He talked about his mother and father—the founders of Christian Mission. Eliza kept looking over at Beck. I wonder how she manages to look so calm?

The open-air meeting at Pool Meadows turned out to be even bigger than the Hallelujahs planned. Beck and Eliza sang, and during their song the excited crowds quieted once again. As the last note faded, Sister Burrell gave her farewell message of these Pool Meadows meetings. It stirred hearts and made Eliza wish Sister Burrell did not have to move on.

Eliza had looked around at the crowd. There stood Jimmy Docker and Katie—that was a miracle. She also saw Jack Sipes with his father. All around the park were former derelicts and ruffians, changed forever.

I want to be part of this. The desire almost burns in my belly. I long to march into battle and maybe even open fire for the Lord. Eliza wondered if she was being theatrical. She ’d been told often enough that she tended to be dramatic. No, this desire must have come from God. It flew in the face of everything she d ever wanted.

But what could she do about it? Mum and Papa asked her to wait. That’s what I’ll do, but I’ll wait in both senses of the word. I’ll wait patiently as they asked, but I’ll also wait upon the Lord as in prayer, asking Him to move. And not just move me, but move from the outside so I’ll be sure. And, what’s even more difficult, move in my parents’ hearts. Yes, that is what she would do.

The plan had been for the crowd to march to the Salvation Factory afterward for tea, but there were so many people at the open-air, they divided into two groups and partook tea in shifts.

As Beck and Eliza marched over with the second group, Eliza leaned over to her friend and said, “Christian Mission is well and truly started in Coventry, don’t you think?”

“Surely our troubles cannot be behind us, can they?”

When they talked about the Hallelujahs now, they usually included themselves. “I hope so,” Eliza said. “Without having to contend with sticks and stones, police and publicans, only think of what we can accomplish.”

As they turned the corner onto Much Park Street, she glanced into an alley in time to see two policemen talking with the most notorious of the tavern keepers; and it didn’t look like police business. Eliza wondered why the scene raised the hairs on the back of her neck.
