The heart of the FAL started life as the SAFN 49. That rifle is a box-fed 7mm, 8mm or .30-06 (they made versions in each) that is charged with stripper clips. The bolt tilts down to lock, and the bottom rear catches on the locking shoulder to close the action. The shell around the bolt moves it back and forth, and tilts it up and down as needed. The magazine comes out only for cleaning, and you load by locking the bolt back and using five-round stripper clips to stuff it full. Which takes only a pair, as the magazine holds 10 rounds. A later, localarsenal modification was to retrofit the SAFN 49 in .30-06 to accept BAR magazines, but they too were locked in, and not quickly exchanged.
