The next thing was a path beside the water

and what the crows saw there

in full aching bloom.

These were followed by mouths in flight

above the city with its blue flash

of windows and what someone thought

of that. Then there was that forsakenness

and pride of those who had found the path

and water joined in a fluxion of promise,

becoming, and winding away. At last

came the men of flowers

and wind stirring them and women

in their millions

begging for joy, cracking its shells

with their teeth.
