Chapter Nine
âI spanned the crossbows and left them upstairs,â said Dan. âOneâs under my bed, oneâs under yours, and one is in the privy room. You still got the one under the counter, right?â
Muhammad raised an eyebrow. âYeah. Er, do you expect me to be attacked while Iâm taking a piss or something?â
âNo, but Iâm just being cautious. Thereâs a crazy murderer on the loose.â
âYou didnât seem that uptight when you came back from the Baron.â
âI couldnât sleep last night and was thinking about having Vaywin stay here with us,â said Dan. âSheâs certainly not helpless, but if some sick bastard is looking for easy victims, a woman living alone in a cave might look pretty good to him.â
âThatâs true, but she wonât want to live here, eh? While you were last gone, she was practically climbing the walls.â
âSheâll get over it. I just want us to have protection in case the murderer ever decides to break in or something.â
âHe seems to prefer lone people, eh?â
âYeah, but you never know. Why take chances with a lunatic? Who knows what he might end up doing?â
Dan told Vaywin about Camden, the note, and then said she should stay at the shop for a while. She acted like heâd asked her to roll around in dog shit.
âYou expect me to live in the city for who knows how long?â
âCamden is dead!â exclaimed Dan. âYou live out here alone-â
âIf anybody tries to kill me, Iâll cut their damn dick off and make them eat it.â
He made a frustrated noise. âI know you can fight, but youâre getting older, and youâre not invincible. I seem to remember someone reminding me that Iâm not invincible either not too long ago. Even if you screamed for help, nobody would hear you out here. I donât want to come visit you one day and find you dead in the cave or out in the woods somewhere.â
âI still think we should leave the area entirely. Itâs you they want, not me.â
âTheyâll just follow. Besides, I have to go do something. Iâd feel better if you stayed at the shop.â
âWhat do you need to do?â she snapped.
"Tax and rent time will come, Camden obviously won't be paying, and if someone goes knocking to demand that he pay up, he won't be there. He might have some things heâd rather nobody find.â
âHeâs dead. I highly doubt that he cares at this point. In his next life, he wonât remember this one.â
Dan didnât believe in people being reincarnated, so he ignored that last bit. âLet people think he was just an artist. Itâs easier that way. I donât think he can be linked to us, but you never know. Itâs another precaution, and he was a friend to us before. Pack up whatever you want to take. If I have to drag you kicking and screaming into Nantret, I will, and I wonât care what the gate guards think.â
âI could kick your ass with one hand tied behind my back,â she muttered, but she got up to pack.
