DON’T FORGET THE WASHING-UP!

I realize there will be readers living already in super-efficient households with ‘on tap’ hot water. For me, though, the hot water takes forever to come through and as well as the waste of cold water having to run down the sink before I can enjoy hot for washing up, I now consider the time, effort, waste and expense for just one bowl of water.

For Aga owners

My hot water takes such a long time to come through the pipes that I now keep a large pan or casserole with a lid in the bottom oven for a regular supply of hot water with no waste and no extra cost.

For those with a wood-burning stove

Invest in a small stove kettle, filled and ready to boil up on top of the stove during the winter months for tea, coffee or washing up.

Electric oven

If the oven is on for something else and there is free space, pop in a lidded casserole or covered bowl of water to give sufficient for washing up after the meal. Even a bowl or large jug filled with water popped into the oven after cooking will often heat sufficiently for washing up using up residual free heat from the turned-off oven.

Kettle

I enjoy a cuppa after a meal and if the kettle is therefore going on anyway and there are maybe not many pots to wash, I will fill the kettle, let it get hot, switch off and pour more than half into the washing-up bowl. Back on with the kettle to boil the remaining water for my cuppa. On these occasions, rather than draining off what seems like gallons from my hot water tank, I boil just what I need in the kettle. I am certainly saving water and probably significant energy too. Just a reminder to descale your kettle regularly – limescale is not only corrosive but will make your kettle inefficient, needing more energy and time to reach a boil.
