Unparalleled Patriotism
From the start of his entrepreneurial career, Jamsetji Tata aimed to build a successful business empire to enrich his country and his countrymen rather than himself. Having travelled internationally, Jamsetji—more than most Indians—saw and recognized the many opportunities his country had for improving the condition of its people. Seeing the ugly and unhealthy industrial towns that had sprung up around factories in England, Jamsetji conceived a vision of an improved industrial town design. Seeing the power of an American waterfall, he was inspired to bring hydroelectric power to Bombay. Staying in Europe’s luxury hotels, he began thinking about the dearth of first-class, world-class hospitality establishments in Bombay and how their absence discouraged tourism as well as foreign business in India. He endeavoured to use each new experience and insight to inspire and create beneficial change in India.
Step one in actually executing the necessary transformation was an investment in the basics: heavy manufacturing, education, medicine and improved living conditions. Jamsetji saw that great strides in all of these areas were possible as long as adequate funding was available. So he made it his life’s mission to ensure a steady flow of the capital necessary to pull India out of poverty.
