J.J. had the same buzzed haircut as Bobby. He was tall and muscular for thirteen. He wore a black T-shirt with a picture of a funny looking skeleton on it, and faded blue jeans that hung low on his hips. He smiled, but his smile did not bring joy.

“And now for the final and fatal shot,” J.J. said.

J. J. picked up an arrow from the ground, strung his bow, pulled his arm back, and just as he let go, Pal let out a loud, pitiful whine. The arrow veered off to the left, completely missing the target.

“Shut that dog up, Bobby! Look what he made me do.”

J.J. picked up a ball on the ground near him and threw it at Pal. The ball hit Pal on his side and the dog slinked away to another spot. Amani felt sick to her stomach. Pal didn’t stop whining.

“We need a plan and quick!” Hude said, “Think, Hude. Think.”

“I only see Bobby and J.J. in there,” Amani said in a surprisingly calm tone. “I can get their attention somehow and you can jump over the fence, untie Pal, and escape through that hole in the fence on the other side of the yard. We can meet at the lake and run home together.”

“I guess you could ring the doorbell until someone answered it. But they probably wouldn’t both come,” Hude said.

Amani thought for a few seconds. “What if I threw a rock through a front window? That should get them both there.”

“I don’t know. That’s pretty drastic,” Hude said.

“We can pay for the window later,” Amani suggested. “The most important thing now is to save Pal.”

“Wait a second,” Hude said. “Do we have to save Pal now? Why don’t we run home and get Mr. Carr. He’ll save Pal and take care of J.J. at the same time.”

“I guess you’re right. It won’t take that long,” Amani said.

“I’ll give you something to whine about!” J.J. yelled.

Bang!

Hude and Amani looked back through the fence. J.J. reached in his pocket and pulled something out. He reached in his other pocket and pulled out a lighter.

Bang!

Pal jumped back. He tried to hide but there was nowhere to go. J.J. pulled out another firecracker, lit it and tossed it even closer to Pal.

Bang!

Pal started frantically pulling on his chain and running around trying to escape. J.J. laughed.

“Stop it, J.J.!” Bobby yelled. “You’re scaring the dog.”

“It’s just a little fun,” J.J. said. “Here, let me show you.”

J.J. pulled out another firecracker and held the flame of the lighter close to the fuse.

“Don’t do it, J.J. Remember what Mom told you,” Bobby said.

“But Mom’s not here,” J.J. smiled.

He lit another firecracker and tossed it near his brother.

Bang!

“Stop it, J.J.”

“Come on, it’s fun. Here’s another.”

Bobby didn’t wait for the next one to come. He took off through the hole in the fence.

“You can’t outrun me, Bobby,” J.J. yelled. “I’m better than you at everything. Wait till I catch you.”

J.J. chased after his brother. The backyard was now empty.

“This is our chance, Amani.
