With the mighty flash came a delayed roll of mighty thunder, heard just as the flash was seen for hundreds of miles. The roar echoed and reverberated from the distant hills and the Sierra Oscuro Range near by…The hills said ‘yes’ and the mountains chimed in ‘yes’. It was as if the earth had spoken and the suddenly iridescent clouds joined in one mighty affirmative answer. Atomic energy—yes.

The Times continued to keep the spotlight on its new star reporter. As it did with Walter Duranty and Herbert Matthews, the newspaper began writing stories on their own journalist’s public appearances. In this case, the paper ran a story about a lecture Laurence gave on the topic and proudly noted that he was the man whom “the Government permitted to study the development of the bomb, as well as witness its first test in New Mexico.”25 It was a dramatic—and very innocent-looking—picture the New York Times was painting of William Laurence and his involvement with the development of the bomb. The newspaper, and Laurence himself, trumpeted the bomb and the journalist’s “privileged” position as a witness to it but kept the story behind the story to an absolute minimum. The official line of the paper was simply that Laurence had been on a “detachment” (a military term, not a journalistic one) to help “enlighten” the laymen about the bomb, as the paper wrote in its August 7 article about the science writer. This was the largest, most expensive, most risk-fraught military development undertaking in history, and the Times made it seem as if Laurence simply stumbled into the secret laboratories and ultra-secure test sites. Of course, there was much more to the story.
