Lamu and Ish-a-tar followed the route along the coast through Gaza, Raphia, Ostracine, Pelusium and further through the Nile delta to Alexandria. They rode directly to the society of the Therapists at Lake Mareotis situated some distance from the town. The news of their arrival had gone before them and they were met by a small group of women dressed in white. For the first time since they had left Jerusalem Lamu saw a smile in the eyes of Ish-a-tar. The closed, worried look had disappeared.

‘How fair everything is here,’ she said to Lamu as if he already knew what she was talking about.

He nodded. He had also come home.

They were taken to the water tank where they washed the dust away. Then they got something to eat in the big common hall in the middle of the cluster of houses which made up this unique society where men and women worked together for the glory of God.

‘What is going to happen here? Is Sister Mariam here?’ Ish-a-tar asked while they were eating.

‘We are here to prepare ourselves. This is the society of the Therapists where sister Mariam was initiated. When we have received the necessary education we shall continue our journey and I hope get the opportunity to meet Sister Mariam.’

They continued to eat in silence, then he said:

‘Sister Mariam’s personal teacher still lives here. She is a very holy woman.’

‘What is her name? Take me to her at once!’

Ish-a-tar put her bread down and was about to stand up when a woman’s voice interrupted her:

‘Mariam Salome, my child. Do not trouble yourself. I’m right here.’

The voice was like balm on their hearts, a healing balm, which removed every shadow but at the same time awakened everything which had been lying about unused for far too long.

‘Here, I am called by my initiation name, Salome.’

Although the woman was getting old she was still beautiful with a straight and dignified bearing. She moved gracefully and almost hovered across the floor as she stepped into the room.

Ish-a-tar got to her feet and Lamu followed her example. Lamu folded his hands in front of his chest and bowed:

‘I greet you, holy one.’ he said.

‘Isn’t this Lamu, the young man who was sent here long ago in order to take Sister Mariam to the Celestial City?’

She also folded her hands and greeted him. Lamu nodded his assent. He was too moved to speak. The whole scene also seemed to move Ish-a-tar. She was, if anything, even more pale than usual, but it simply made her still more strangelooking and radiant.

‘And you must be Ish-a-tar,’ Salome said, ‘I have heard much about you. I’m glad you decided to come. But rest now. Tomorrow is another day and we shall start your education.’

She greeted them once more.

‘May peace be with you.’

Then she was gone.

After the meal they were taken to the guest-house where they were each given their own room.

‘Tomorrow we part,’ Lamu said, ‘you’ll be staying with your teacher and I with mine. We’ll meet every seven days when men and women meet at the forum.
