CHAPTER 15
Two weeks after Laura’s little white lie to her father, the campaign had an advertisement featuring him in heavy rotation in South Carolina. The ad included photos of him in his Tuskegee Airmen’s uniform decades earlier and, finally, a photo of him with Luke and Laura at their wedding. Though he refused to call Luke “son,” despite the director’s urging, he did agree to look into the camera and say, “He’s a great husband, and a great father, and I know he will make a great president.”
Twenty takes later they got one that was believable enough to use.
Though the campaign anticipated the ad would help significantly with older black voters, they didn’t know if it would be enough, so Luke had secretly begun working on his own “Kennedy speech” to address the public’s uncertainty about his religious identity. He was sitting in a hotel room in South Carolina, tackling another draft, when his BlackBerry began vibrating. But his cell phone alerted him to a message at the same time. He picked up his phone first. There was a text from Nate. “URGENT,” it read. “Check berry.” He then picked up his Berry and saw that the subject line read, “URGENT Fw: Hate Group Planned Attacks on Churches for MLK holiday.” Luke began reading. He wrote back to Nate and copied his communications director, “What more do we know?”
“Still gathering details . May want to release some sort of statement . Will get back once I know more,” his communications director wrote back.
Nate replied and said, “Call me ASAP.” His first words to Luke were, “Are you sitting down?”
“No,” Luke replied.
“Well, you might want to.”
“Just tell me.”
“The hate group story . ”
“Yes?”
“I’ve gotten two calls from outlets who say that the informer who tipped off the government to the attacks is Jack Means . ”
“Luke, did you hear me?” Nate pressed. “Luke?”
“Yeah . I’m here.”
