These are just a handful of questions, and I admit, some of them can be rather uncomfortable to voice out loud, but they are worth thinking about. Perhaps you have never viewed pornography, but maybe you have seen one too many sex scenes in the movies you have watched, or read about sex too much in womenâs magazines. The proliferation of all things sex in our culture is directly related to our struggle against pornography. This is one reason that it is so difficult to combat its power over our own minds and the minds of those we love.
So how can Christians fight against it? How do we live faithfully in a porn-filled culture? Here are a few suggestions:
Have a Healthy View of Sex
This may seem obvious, but if pornography presents a distorted view of sex, the answer to its influence canât simply be, âJust say no.â We must put forward a healthy alternative to the feeble view of sex that pornography offers us.
It has been said that the constant refrain in our churches for young people to save themselves for marriage has only made our young people confused and afraid of sex. People enslaved to pornography and people who are victims of its grip need more than horror stories and warnings of sexual brokenness and dysfunction. They need to see why the vision of sexuality offered by pornography is not Godâs plan in the first place. They need a healthy and biblical view of sex. They need to see Godâs beautiful design for marital intimacy in order to fully comprehend the ugliness of pornography and lust. They need to see that God did create them for pleasure, but for a pleasure that finds its joy in the good of another. But most important, they need to see that by finding their joy in the pleasure of another they are actually worshipping God. All good gifts, even the gift of sex, are designed to point us to the giver of that gift. Pornography strips the gift of sex from the God who created it. We can channel the good desires for sex that so many people have away from pornography by showing them that those desires are driving them to the only one who can truly satisfy them completelyâour Creator.
This goes beyond church campaigns to celebrate sex. We donât need to adopt the worldâs ideology when it comes to thinking positively about sex. Instead, we must present Godâs healthy view of sex to the people in our churches and under our care, not so they can be as sex-experienced as the world around them, but so they can catch a glimpse of Godâs intentional, perfect, and loving design for His people. They need to see husbands and wives loving each other in sickness and in health. They need to see husbands finding their wives beautiful even after decades of life, years of childbearing, physical illness, and gravity takes its toll on their wivesâ bodies. They need to see wives enjoying
