How to design a speech that helps you achieve your objectives
The corporate world seems to believe that the first stage in delivering a speech is to reach for the PowerPoint slides. No, no, no! This, if you are going to use slides at all, should be the last part of the design process. If you follow this nine-step process when designing your speech, then you will almost always, on paper, have a keynote that will help you achieve your objectives.
STEP 1: DECIDE ON WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IN YOUR SPEECH
There is a reason you have been asked to deliver this speech. The person who booked you to speak, your booker, will be able to tell you what they want to achieve as a result of your speaking at their event. Is it to inform, persuade, sell, inspire, request action? What is it? You may find that your booker already has a title in mind for your slot on the programme.
STEP 2: DO YOUR AUDIENCE ANALYSIS
Now that you know your objective for the speech, it is time to research what you know about the audience – and what your booker can tell you about the audience.
