Step 2: Doing Your Homework - The 6 W’s

Before heading off on an extended trip it is best to determine the scope of your adventure. It is better (and far more cost effective) to plan and get the insurance you require before you go. Once you leave home, your options for insurance coverage become severely limited, and potentially a lot more expensive.

The important questions to ask:

1. Where am I going?

The level of coverage and the cost of travel insurance will depend on where you are going. You will want to consider a policy that covers you for each country you are planning to travel in.

You also need to be aware of the policy coverage about passing through a country while ‘in transit’. You may not be planning to travel in a country with high healthcare costs such as the United States, Canada or Japan. However, you may have to pass through these countries to get to where you are going.

I can speak from experience – If I had developed deep vein thrombosis leading to an embolism after an epic 11-hour flight to the US or Japan. Two weeks in intensive care without health insurance could have caused financial ruin. ~Michael

Once you know where you are going, you need to understand the potential risks there. You may need extra coverage for these potential risks (if coverage is even available).

For instance: If the state department has issued a warning or a travel advisory for a particular region you may not be covered for an incident related to the warning, if you choose to go to that region. You have to do your homework.

Important considerations:

Not all plans will cover you for health related issues such as pandemics or epidemics such as the bird flu, SARs or MERS

Not all plans will cover you for travel interruptions due to civil unrest, riots or war

Not all plans have transit allowances for countries excluded in the policy wording
