THE PLUMED SERPENT FLIES EAST
The winged disk symbols known from many parts of the Near East, such as Mesopotamia, Persia, Anatolia, and Egypt (fig. 4.10), also deserve to be discussed in the context of the geometry of the mind. In these areas, and some other parts of the world as well, winged disks appear on reliefs and the tops of gateways and temples going back to the beginning of the Sixth Wave. Overall these disks were associated with the Tree of Life, which they can be seen hovering over on many seals from Mesopotamia. In Egypt they are known from about 2600 BCE (when the Great Pyramid was built).31 It is widely believed that the wings indicate that these disks have an origin in the heavens and were perceived as having a divine origin. They were also intrinsically connected with providing protection of kingship and were thus in Egypt often associated with Horus,32 which the pharaoh was a reincarnation of. The winged disks were there typically also shown with a pair of serpents, the royal cobras. Many suggestions have been made as to what these disks represent. They are often said to be associated with the sun, sometimes also to symbolize a perfected soul.
What I suggest is that the winged disks symbolize the influx of the geometric structure of the circle and the boundaries of the human mind this would create. Such disks emanating from the Tree of Life represent the circular enclosures, metaphysical geometric imprints, which, together with the eight-partitioning, created the civilized mind. That something was winged meant that it was a divinity emanating from the heavens or the god of heaven. Also, the serpents themselves may well have symbolized the wave movement, which brought this sacred geometry to humans (fig. 4.10b). Here we then have a direct parallel between the Near East winged sun disk with cobras and the Mesoamerican Plumed Serpent. Much like the Assyrian relief of a winged disk in figure 4.10a, Quetzalcoatl brought an eight-partitioned cross (fig. 3.2), which in turn is identical with the Egyptian symbol for city.
