Ravi was by the jukebox when she arrived at the pub. She signalled to the barman, who took her credit card off her and began issuing the promised drinks and baskets of chips, then she crossed to Ravi and joined him in studying the track list. When he asked about her interview with Cameron Armstrong, she repeated what sheâd told Murdo and asked Ravi to keep it to himself.
âAye, course,â Ravi said. âJeezo. Thatâs the sort of thing thatâd cost you a fortune in therapy.â
Shona pursed her lips in agreement. âI heard you were off to Glasgow tomorrow,â she said.
Ravi nodded and smoothed a hand across his head. âIâm desperate for a decent cut.â
To Shona, his hair appeared as impeccable as always.
âHaving a spot of lunch anywhere nice?â Shona said.
Ravi looked at her and tried to fathom her interest. The boss was up to something.
âI hate eating alone,â he said, curious. âAnywhere youâd recommend?â
âI was thinking your old boss might like to see how youâve turned out.â
âDCI Paterson?â
âAlways good to keep up with old friends.â Shona smiled. DCI Paterson, now head of the Homicide Review Group at the Historical Cases Unit, had agreed to offer some advice about the Girls in the Glen. It was a gamble on Shonaâs part, sending Ravi. He was a good officer and Paterson might decide to lure him back to the bright lights of Glasgow.
âIs the table booked?â
âAt two p.m. at The Ubiquitous Chip. Iâm afraid I wonât be joining you.â Shona didnât want Detective Superintendent Davies to know she was in touch with Paterson. Police Scotland was a small pond, and someone was bound to spot them lunching together. She also really needed to check in on Becca and there wouldnât be time, with a round trip to Glasgow. âBut lunch is on me.â
âBelter.â
The Girls in the Glen case wasnât strictly Patersonâs remit. It was solved, the verdict unanimous. If there had been any doubt, the jury could have gone for a third verdict â a peculiarity of Scottish law, not proven, which resulted in acquittal for the accused and a lifetime of not knowing for the victimâs family. That always felt like an accusation for a police officer: if youâd done your job better, weâd know for sure. At least the officers working what must have been a tough case were spared that. The killer had gone to jail, giving the families some small measure of peace. But for Olivia Thomsonâs mother that peace would only come with her daughterâs recovery and burial, and Shona planned to do everything she could to make sure that happened.
