Plates were cast aside on their favorite table at Mille Ponti, still loaded with mouthwatering Italian food. Andi had ordered stuffed mushrooms but barely finished one of the two portabellas filled with ham and molten smoked cheese. Janelle had pushed aside her salmon Positano the moment Andi had asked, pointing at the skinny and lewd server, “How much do you think he’s making?”

“All right, that’s it,” she said, and the plate grated in protest against the wrought iron surface of the table. “I can’t stand it anymore, girl. You still don’t have a job?” She pointed her rhinestone-encrusted fingernail at Andi accusingly.

Andi’s eyes darted at Janelle for a moment before seeking patterns in the patio’s maroon tiles. “I would’ve told you, right?”

“I was hoping you were an asshole,” Janelle said, patting her lips with the napkin, then throwing it on the table as if it had offended her. “Way better than being unemployed after all this time.”

She shrugged, wishing she had an answer. “Craig wants me to work with him, and I’ve said yes.”

“To do what?”

Andi groaned. “Don’t ask. Some sort of assistant for his real estate business. Superstar wife, host for his parties, glorified gofer. And cook. I forgot to mention, cook.”

“A cook with a PhD,” she added, going for the kill in typical Janelle style. “Are you kidding me?”

“I wish I was.” Being there with Janelle, speaking her uncensored mind for the first time in weeks, brought her dangerously close to a crying spell. She gulped some ice water hastily to keep her tears in check and her nausea subdued.

Lately, her sickness had gotten worse, and every bout of retching burned her stomach as if she’d been eating glass shards. Sometimes, before an attack of nausea hit, she had cramps, violent to the point of leaving her breathless, curled up in a ball on the floor or keeled over, barely able to breathe. Only then the retching started. She’d grown to welcome it because it brought some relief from the cramping.

She’d wanted to see a doctor, but Craig had been putting it off while at the same time insisting he accompany her. He was right; doctors these days were nothing but cash-generating machines for the for-profit healthcare system, not because they wanted to, but because they didn’t have much choice. As much as she could hold on and push back the expense, she would do it. Every bit of money helped. She’d looked it up on the internet, and all first trimester moms were complaining about the same thing, and it always went away on its own.

“You all right?” Janelle asked, squeezing her forearm. “You turned pale.”

She wished she could share the news with Janelle, but she’d given Craig her word. She’d already spilled the beans with his parents; had he known, he’d be furious with her. “Just not feeling all that good today. Sorry for being such a pain lately.” She forced a smile and looked at Janelle.

“Wait a minute, girl, you’ve got nothing to apologize for.
