This time when I arrive at the office building for the matchmaking service, Tracy directs me back to Elio’s office without any argument. I walk past the lounge where we had sat before and go to the very end of the hallway where a set of large wooden double doors opens into a spacious office. It has the same type of airy, sunlit feeling as the lounge, created by a curved back wall comprised almost entirely of glass. It fits the theme and apparent message of the matchmaking service perfectly. The entire place has a spiritual, natural lean that seems to correspond exactly with what he has said about souls taking a journey to find each other.

Elio is sitting behind a massive desk that looks like it was carved out of one piece of wood. Two computer monitors take up a portion of the space that he seems invested in what is on one of them. He glances up when I step through the door.

“Emma,” he says. “You’re back.”

“Is it too soon?” I ask.

I had stopped for a quick lunch in between the police station and coming back here, trying to stretch out the amount of time so he would have more opportunity to get the information. If he still needed more time, I could just sit somewhere and continue my research.

“No, not at all,” he says, shaking his head and gesturing for me to come over to the desk. “Please, come sit. I was just doing a last check through my records to make sure I hadn’t missed anything. I gathered everything I could find about each of the women. They all sought out my services at different times. Rachel and Veronica are the only two who overlapped at any point, and that was only for a couple of weeks. They also all utilized different levels of my services.”

“Can you explain those levels to me?” I ask.

“Of course,” he replies. “I know the journey to find a partner is different for everybody, so I want to be as accessible to as many people as I possibly can. That’s why I offer various different levels of membership, each with its own opportunities and privileges. The most introductory form of my services is completely free. At various times throughout the year, I throw singles mixers in different towns all around the country. It allows registered participants to interact with others, meet with my staff, and get information about further services.

“Some people who attend these mixers only come for socialization and entertainment. I know that. But a pretty good portion seek out further support and services afterward. I have even had a couple of instances where people meet at the mixers and go on to get married, so I take those as a personal victory as well.”

He grins and I can’t help but smile back at him. Even with the darkness of the situation in front of us, I can see that this man truly does believe in love and has hope for anyone willing to search for it.
