Ava runs through the forest not caring that the bottoms of her feet are getting cut up by frozen roots and rocks on the ground. Her throat is raw, but she keeps shouting. The louder she is, the more likely they are to hear her before she’s reached the house. It will make them come out and they’ll come with her. They’ll get back to the pond faster.

Gemma follows close behind Paul. She can’t let him go out there on his own. Out on the ice, still lying on his belly, staring not into the dead man’s eyes but at his chest now, Cyrus trembles and cries. The tears freeze on his skin and his nose feels like it’s closing. He can hear Paul coming up behind him and wants to get to him faster, so he pushes back with his hands to slide across the ice.

That pressure is just enough to break through the ice. The skating rink opens up beneath him and Cyrus falls down into the bitterly cold water. The last thing he hears is his brother screaming his name as he disappears beneath the surface. The cold of the water is painful immediately and Cyrus forces himself to open his eyes so he can see where he is and how to get back up through the ice.

The man’s body is close enough that if Cyrus moved his hand just slightly in front of him, he would touch his arm. Panic rushes through him and he starts to thrash, unable to control his movements or his attempts to cry out from beneath the water.
