Part Two

Thirty-Four

Swan’s head hurt. And he couldn’t see anything through the blindfold. They’d done that quickly, efficiently, as soon as they got him in the van. He’d only had time for the merest glimpse of them before they bundled him in, and it hadn’t helped as they were wearing balaclavas. They had tied his legs and hands but they hadn’t gagged him and so he had told them what he thought of them, loud and long, until he got a stunning slap on the side of the head. Now he was quiet, trying to conserve his energies for a double task: working out who had taken him, and how he was going to escape.

He tried not to think about Polly and Kel, left behind in the street. He could only hope they were safe but right now his only chance of getting away and helping them was if he concentrated on the task at hand.

He tried to replay in his head the scene of those few seconds before he was taken. He’d seen the car, that mysterious shabby car that kept turning up. He’d told the others to hide and gone to investigate – and that’s when the van had come, out of nowhere. Or was it nowhere? Think. Remember. He forced himself deeper into the memory. What had he actually seen, in the street, aside from the car? A row of terrace-type houses. Small shops. Bicycles propped against a shop wall. Nobody in the street. Look up. Somebody at a window, looking down. Couldn’t see a face. A flash of light. What? A camera? Binoculars? Yes. Someone had been watching. But who? And where were they looking? Not at him, not where he’d come from, anyway. But further down the street. An open doorway. No, not to a house. A loading bay. Something like that. That’s where the van had come from. It had been hidden, out of sight.

Someone had known they were coming. Or at least, that he was coming. Remembering the car at the port, he thought, it was no coincidence. They’d expected him to make for the port. But how would anyone know? Nobody knew except he, Polly and Kel. And Bear – who of course had suggested the plan to go to the river port. But Bear was dead.

He could still have got a message out, before he died. Swan had not seen any sign of a phone or computer at Bear’s cottage but that didn’t mean there wasn’t one, somewhere, or even some other way of communicating. But if Bear was the one who’d tipped off whoever it was who had taken Swan, what could possibly have been in it for him? He wouldn’t have cared that Swan had deserted the base. And he had loathed the squadders. He was a loner, against both sides. It just didn’t feel right.

But the car had not moved when the van had appeared. It had stayed put. The unease crawled under Swan’s skin. What did that mean?

The van lurched to a stop.
