No person can mock God. We cannot ignore and dispute his plan for our livelihood and still expect to have his blessing on our life. But when we are obedient to the call to tithe, he will bless us in unimaginable ways—both financially and otherwise. I have learned firsthand that I would rather tithe 10 percent and live with God’s supernatural blessing on the other 90 percent than to have the full 100 percent in my pocket and operate without God’s blessing.

On a side note, one of the most frequently asked questions I hear about tithing is, “Should I tithe based on my gross income or my net income?” My answer is always the same: “Which amount do you want God to bless?” When you make a decision to tithe based on your net income, you are essentially putting the government in a position of priority over God. You are giving to him from what’s left over after Uncle Sam takes his due. Giving based on what the government leaves behind is not a tithe.

Third, Malachi 3 is the only place in all of Scripture where God says “test me” in a positive way. He is essentially saying, “Bring me the tithe and see if I don’t bless you. Go ahead. Try it.” His challenge here is to Christians and non-Christians alike.

At the church I pastor, The Journey Church, we sometimes issue a tithe challenge to people, and we direct it at both believers and nonbelievers. I teach what God says about the tithe, as we’ve been discussing here, and then ask people to test God in his promise by committing to tithe for a short period of time, usually three or four months.

In issuing the challenge, I will go so far as to say, “Hey, if you don’t believe in God, isn’t it worth a few dollars of your income over the next few months to prove once and for all that he doesn’t exist? You are staking your eternity on this, so why not? Why don’t you tithe for a few months, and if you still think God doesn’t exist, you can live the rest of your life without having to worry about it.” God said to test him.
