THE STORY OF ELIBUH AND GNAZABAR

In the golden age of Dorrodisia there was a little rhyme that most certainly would have been lost by now, had it not been connected with a great scandal. Honesty forbids that it should go unrecorded:

Elibuh and Gnazabar,

Mighty giants from afar,

Began to set up shop, but—‘Nay!’

The Mayor said curtly, ‘Go away!’

One fine morning in that splendid Year Three, as the early morning children of Dorrodisia were on their way to school, a dreadful uproar broke out in Middle Square. Raucous laughter woke the worthy citizens. They could scarcely believe their ears as a crowd of small children chanted in unison, stamping out the rhythm: The Mayor is a pig, the Mayor is a pig, the Mayor is a pig!

The Headmaster rushed to the scene. ‘Shame on you!’ he cried.

‘But it’s painted up there!’ the children screamed, and pointed to the front of the Town Hall. And there indeed was the sentence, executed in beautiful ornamental lettering, high up on the wall like a poster:
