Out on the street, Sean and Dave could see Tracy’s neighbors watching the house from their porches. They made it down to Dave’s car and Sean grabbed for the radio. He needed to get the loose description of the attacker out to the patrols. Dave watched him as he did it. When he was finished Dave spoke his mind. “I think we have enough to go talk to Welch now.”

Sean put the radio down and asked, “The cut?”

“He’s either got it or he doesn’t. With as much blood as we saw in there, it had to be a pretty good whack. Something like that would be hard to cover up.”

Sean agreed. There was no way anyone could hide a wound like that. He responded, “That’s a good idea, and if Christopher can get us a blood type from the pool of it in the garage, we’ll actually have our first piece of evidence directly from the killer.”

Once they had the killer’s blood type, they could use it to narrow down their suspect search. It would save them days of work with their veteran angle or it could help implicate Welch.

As the detectives talked over their next steps, the forensics team and another police vehicle pulled up in front of the house. Lieutenant Harrison got out of the patrol car and started walking towards them. He looked alert and serious as he called out to them, “We heard you on the radio. What’s the story?”

“Our guy was here,” Dave replied. “He was waiting for the lady in the garage, like usual.” She heard him break the glass on her garage door and met him at the door into the house with a knife.”

The lieutenant’s eyes widened. “And she’s fine?”

“She’s doing ok. He didn’t touch her.”

“We got every cruiser we can scanning the streets, and the K9 units are hitting the parks. Hopefully, that profile you gave will give us something. Do you think she can help make a composite?”

Sean sighed, “No. She couldn’t remember his face. She was too shaken up.”

Even though they only had a vague description, the group felt hopeful. They knew the killer couldn’t be far, but time was against them.

Harrison continued, “Chief Perry informed me that he got a call from the mayor. We’ve been approved to use a helicopter.”

Sean and Dave weren’t expecting to hear that. With the added help, they felt confident this was their chance to end the hunt once and for all. The lieutenant pointed down the street and said, “We’ll have the chopper sweep the neighborhood and then hit every nook and cranny on its way east to Denver.”

“Where do you want us?” replied Sean.

“Either checking the streets in your car or with the search parties in the parks; I’ll leave it up to you.”

“We’ll probably hit the closest ditch trail and work our way into the parks. The patrols will have the streets covered.”

Harrison nodded and looked at the detectives earnestly. “Good luck tonight. We all know we need it. Stay on the radios.
