If I’d been a straight man then maybe I’d have been impressed by Akane’s looks. She was quite stunning, truth be told, her long black hair pinned up to reveal the smooth curve of her pale shoulders. She was wearing far too much make-up. Well, at least I considered this to be the case and as a lover of men, I concede that maybe she was right and I was wrong. Perhaps it was just the right amount.

Undeniably pretty, but tedious. That was my first impression of her. She couldn’t compete with her brother in the attractiveness stakes, that’s for sure.

“And you know Katashi wants to start his own fashion label?” Akane pushed the food around on her plate with her chopsticks.

I seriously couldn’t have cared less about Katashi’s future plans. Akane had never shut up about him the whole night and I only pictured the last view I had of his ass whenever she mentioned his name.

“Wonderful.” I reached for my wine glass. A waiter hurriedly topped it of for me before I could touch it. Akane, rather rudely I thought, pushed her glass for a refill too. The money spent sending her to finishing school was an utter waste. She was the daughter of a Yakuza and behaved as one. A spoilt rich girl with no amount of breeding. I suddenly remembered Hiroshi from my days at university. He’d seen right though the façade of money and straight to the real Katashi. A useless, yet pretty nobody to whom power could only ever bring more wealth. Not teach him etiquette or lessen his brattish behaviour.

I knew myself to be doomed if I let my father trap me into marriage. I’d be nothing in the family of Katashi and Akane. A faceless man in a suit at the back of everyone else in photographs.

These thoughts tumbled around in my head until I noticed someone join our table. I looked up to see the harlot himself, splendid in a silvery grey suit and matching tie. He leaned and kissed his sister on the cheek. She gazed at him in a soppy way, obviously taken in by the smarm of her attractive brother.

He shifted his attention from her to me. “Kanno. You look charming as ever.”

Did his father never accuse him of the heinous crime of homosexuality the way mine did to me? A definite effeminate edge laced the sound of his voice. His mannerisms were precise or maybe even overdone.

Being gay myself I abhorred the stereotypes often bandied about concerning those who preferred their own sex and I realised how wrong I was in attributing Katashi’s behaviourisms to his sexuality. I gave myself a mental scold, knowing I was merely smarting from the treatment I’d endured at home. My father accused me of liking men because he’d heard that I did. This was simply a fact and although I’d always been secretive, perhaps someone had been less discreet than I. Aki, for one, had blabbed about sleeping with me. I didn’t kill every rent boy I’d ever taken to my bed but maybe I should have.
