Chapter 6: Advantages and Disadvantages of PaaS
If you’ve made it this far, thank you for sticking with it. I’m not going to bore you anymore with introductory sentences, so let’s jump straight into the advantages and disadvantages of PaaS – or as I like to call them, pros and cons.
PROS:
Less complexity – we’ve covered this one in depth. To summarize, there is no need for developers to worry about infrastructure or middleware when using a PaaS.
Scalability is easy – Cloud providers allow developers to autoscale their applications easily, and even in an automated fashion.
Pay as you go – Operating expenses are incurred as opposed to capital expenses. For example, developers can rent virtual infrastructure as opposed to purchasing it themselves. This means, LESS RISK!
Testing is possible – Developers can run load balancing and stress tests to assess performance that would otherwise be impossible on a local environment.
Deployment is fast – Using a PaaS, developers can deploy their applications to the cloud in as little as a minute. Compare this process to setting up the entire infrastructure yourself! This opens the doors for crafty A/B testing and continuous integration.
Focus on the customer – As developers worry less and less about the infrastructure and middleware, they can concentrate on writing useful applications for their end user. This enables developers to focus on the core business, increasing usage, and driving sales.
Use of services – PaaS developers can use pre-built tools, such as databases, analytic services, security, disaster recovery, etc. to help build their applications. There is no need for developers to recreate the wheel.
