CHAPTER NINE

Garza lit a smoke. “He’s going to survive. If he were dead, we’d know by now,” he said matter-of-fact. He paced the living room as Lucy sat on the sofa watching the news.

“Who the fuck carries a gun on a hiking trail?” she asked.

Garza snickered. “I should have known he’d have a piece.”

“Why?”

“Because any man with a past like his wouldn’t be caught without protection.”

“More shit we have to shovel,” Lucy said.

“We’ll be better prepared next time. We can’t afford not to be.”

“You ever get caught out there? I mean someone almost put one in your ass?” Lucy asked.

“Not me but others I knew. There was a man—some nobody who had slept with a made guy’s wife. He kept a twenty-two on him all the time. Some guys had been sent to take care of him. When they finally caught him, he put two fellas down before catching a bullet in the noggin. These guys he put down were enforcers, but they had underestimated him. And they paid for it.”

“We’ll be more careful.”

“Soto will be on high alert. Even if he figures it was a random dog loose on the trail, the whole thing is enough to shake him up. He’ll be watching his back.”

“Since when is an A.D.A. getting attacked by a dog not news?” Lucy asked as she turned the knob on the TV. “They report on trivial shit, but an A.D.A. nearly dying doesn’t make it?”

“It’s not news because he doesn’t want it to be.”

“What about the cops?”

“They will buy whatever he tells them.”

“Shit,” she said, “I thought we had him for sure.”

“We’ll get him,” Garza said, “we wait until things settle and give it another shot.”

“Poor Sarge. I can’t believe we just left him like that.”

“We didn’t have a choice.”

“Yeah, but he would never have been in that mess had it not been for us.”

“Let it go.”

“How? I mean don’t tell me you don’t feel something. He was our friend.”

“I buried my last friend on the beach. Sarge wasn’t a friend, he was a soldier—a means to an end. What I feel is tired, frustrated, angry but I ain’t the sentimental type.”

Lucy’s phone vibrated. She picked it up and ran her thumb across the screen.

“It’s a text from Martin…he wants me to meet him at the hospital. Soto is going to have surgery on his leg.”

“Which hospital?”

“Cedars.”

“I’ll take you,” Garza said.
