CHAPTER 28

When I arrived home from quilting, I looked around for Sam so I could relay the news from Officer Wilson. He was inside the garage rearranging some things and was glad to see me as always. I reported a pleasant quilting session and then told him about Steve. His concern was grave and he cautioned me to be with someone at the shop or when I left the shop. He then brought up the attempt to pry open the shop door as a reminder.

“I know you are used to coming and going as you please, but until this is resolved, you must be careful.”

“I hear what you’re saying, Sam, but I’ll find it hard to do that with my schedule. This creep is not going to invade my life like that. He probably left the area anyway. I promise I will be more careful, just for you.” I kissed him on the cheek and started to go back to the house.

“There’s some chili cooking on the stove for us,” he yelled.

“That sounds great with this cooler weather coming in,” I answered back.

I walked into a kitchen full of aroma. I knew how to make a quick batch of cornbread from a box mix, so I began preparing that for the meal that Sam was kind enough to start. Nancy insisted I take some of the baked goodies with me, which I knew Sam would devour in a minute.

After we ate, we grabbed our jackets and sat on the south porch with some coffee. The wind was picking up and leaves were tumbling off the trees much faster than I cared to think about. Sam said he’d have the nursery send over some guys to do leaf pick up in a week or two when the trees would be further along.

“We’d better get that cookout scheduled with th eBarristers before Thanksgiving,” Sam suggested. “We may also want to think about having a big Thanksgiving dinner at our house. We have lots of room. That table opens up to seat twelve, I bet. Would you be up for that?”

“Oh my.” He took me by surprise. “Mother always loved having everyone for that holiday. We also have to think about your mother.”

“My point, Anne,” said Sam, now standing up. “We have widowed mothers and I figure it’s our turn to entertain. I don’t know if my sisters will make the trip, but I bet my mother will.”

“You’re probably right,” I said, now giving it some thought. “I think I want to talk it over with Mother though. She has got to be feeling a little lonely right now and I don’t want her to think I’m just taking over her life.”

Sam looked bewildered. “If you’re afraid of the kitchen duty, I’ll be happy to be in charge. I’ve cooked a turkey or two in my day,” he bragged, showing his command with hands on his hips.

“I just bet you have, big guy,” I teased him. “There isn’ tmuch you haven’t done. I think we need an early night t oturn in.
