My heart pounds as I realise that this isn’t one of Hanna’s fantasies. She looks scared. I have already considered that Alice’s death might not have been a natural one. The official line is that she tumbled down the stairs and hit her head on the newel post at the bottom. Certainly possible, but it does leave plenty of room for speculation.

‘Do you have any evidence that Max was involved? Where was he when it happened?’

‘He was upstairs too; I heard him talking on the phone. He must have heard her scream and appeared at the top of the landing before Alice had even reached the bottom. He rushed down after her, but it was too late.’

‘You told me Max was out at the time; which is it, Hanna?’

‘I get confused, but thinking about it, he was definitely here. He was first on the scene when she fell. It was a traumatic experience. Is it any wonder I don’t remember it exactly?’

‘Do you remember any clearer now?’

‘Yes I do; I was in the hall and heard the sickening thud as her head hit that post.’

He was there. More than that, he was close enough to have pushed her. Does Max have it in him to murder someone? I’ve only known him a short time, but it is possible that Hanna could be right; the man is unpredictable, the incident with the dress told me that. But if Max did push her, that begs the question why.

I regret coming here, meeting these people and getting myself involved in something so dangerous. But I have to find out who sent me the invite, because whoever it was knows exactly who I really am, and indeed who Nancy was too… and if they tracked me down once, they could do that again, even if I run… unless I find them, but first I have to find out who they are.’

I’m on my way back to the office when I realise that I’ve forgotten all about the data stick; mind you, given everything that’s happened, I’m not surprised. It must have been Nancy who hid it, and she must have had a reason. Why else would she put my name on it?

Back in the office, Max has left a note on my desk. He wants printouts of all the emails received this week. Easy enough and shouldn’t take long.
