Darkness and silence surrounded the Control Centre at Nemen. Most of the fires had died down leaving only a smouldering glow in the remains of the many warehouses and military installations. One of the nearest warehouses was only a partial shell, the steel frames still standing at one end. Nearly all of the cladding had been blown away and the contents of the warehouse were now just charred debris. By the side of one of the steel frames a large cylinder of grey swirling mist began to form.

Inside the Control Centre, several Warriors worked at the control consoles while many more stood patiently waiting. Those who stood waiting were waiting for the Dominant of the Belol’Fan to give them the orders that would turn the war back in their favour. The substance of those orders the Dominant was finding rather elusive.

The low level tracking arrays told an uncomfortable story. He had no more than three ships left, and none of them had got through to reach the Assassin-Drones. At one point success appeared to have been gained. Careful positioning of the ships available had presented his enemy with a prize they had snatched eagerly. But then the ship that got through the resulting gap had disappeared over the city. He was still unsure why.

The news from the Second of the Mysan’Taf was equally depressing. His attack on the Edenite RNP building was meeting stiff resistance in the underground system and the vanguard of the Assassin-Drones was almost at the highway. It was certain now that a restricted street battle with many buildings and ruins for cover was to be denied them. Instead an open battlefield with little cover beckoned. At every turn their moves had been blocked. It wasn’t by coincidence.

There was a single adversary at work somewhere, someone who had anticipated their every move. The Edenites would not possess a military mind capable of such strategic planning. In any case they had been completely defeated. Only their ships still flew. They were an annoyance, no more. His real adversary lay elsewhere. And there was only one place where a strategy such as this could be orchestrated.

The increased progress of the Diggers was the only good news he had received so far. But as this was beyond any outside interference it was far from unexpected. The tunnel complex on Eden now stretched from the capital in the south all the way to the mountains in the north. And here at Nemen the Diggers were already beyond the city and close to the landing fields.

It was time to take direct action.

The Dominant turned to the first of his Warriors, his voice hissing and clicking in urgency.

“Contact all ships in our control. They are to engage and destroy the Edenite vessels. There must be none left in the sky above the Capital or the battle zone.”

The Warrior swept his smaller hand diagonally before him. “It shall be made so.” He moved over to one of the control consoles where he set to work immediately.
