Near Saint-Thomas-en-Argonne (Marne), July 1915. This shallow trench is protected by a wall of gabions, a feature of field fortifications since medieval times. The wicker baskets were light to transport and simple to manufacture. Filled with earth, they weighed 18–22kg and created a sound, easily repairable barrier. One man (second left) holds his white-metal mess-tin. ‘The Germans bronzed their mess-tins,’ recalled Captain Charles Delvert. ‘A seemingly minor point. Wrong, a very important detail.
