The encounter with Pablo and Alicia was swell. David figures he’ll just loiter on Main Street. Maybe he’ll create serendipity. Or meet another Pablo.

There’re no restrictions on admittance to the coffee house. Ten minutes sipping coffee yields David a conversation with a hippie, Milo. “Hey dude,” he says. “You look like Bowie in his prime.”

This stops David cold. He’d hang out with anyone at this point.

Milo invites David to a party at his townhouse, mixes him a White Russian and smokes him out.

The only lights in the dump are Christmas lights. The conversation is low. The guests are tranquil. They make political points that are detached from reality.

An older hippie arrives. His beard is bigger than Jesus’s and half gray. He distributes tiny tied-off baggies. David isn’t sure what’s going on. He says no thanks to a baggie. The guy has thirty or four baggies left over.

Intent to distribute.

David gulps another White Russian.

A hippie girl starts talking about chakras. He pretends to know what a chakra is. Somehow, her arm is tied-off and there’s a syringe full of dirty brown solution in her hand. She injects herself and exhales like she’s been holding her breath for a week. David starts talking about the chakras, acting like it’s no big deal. He looks around and five other people have needles in or around their arms.

I guess a fraternity isn’t the worst thing in the world…

The door is kicked in. Bright lights shine on the room. “Everybody down on the ground!” a Swat Cop yells.

Most everyone is already on the ground. David hides under a coffee table. A Swat Cop shines a light under, pulls him out, cuffs him and hauls him away.

He laughs and cries on the ride to the precinct.

He calls his moms.
