AN INEXPLICABLE CRIME

Three days later, Inspector Drew returned to see the Whites and offer his abject apologies.

Henry was cleared of all suspicion. Several reliable witnesses had confirmed his alibi. He had not left America until the morning two days after the crime. In the plane taking him to England, a number of passengers remembered the brilliant card tricks with which he entertained them in flight. It was also established that Bob Farr was not in England when Henry had been sighted simultaneously at the Oxford and London stations. At that time he was lying on a hospital bed in Washington, D.C., because the day before he had been admitted for an appendix operation.

The mystery remained as unfathomable as before. Bob Farr was a decent fellow, modest, pleasant, with no family and not much money. There was absolutely no explanation for his murder. The inquest determined that he had arrived in England, for the first time in his life, a week before the murder. He had spent four days in a hotel in Oxford, after which there was no trace of him.

It would not be accurate to claim that his death touched us deeply, since, apart from Henry, nobody knew him. Nevertheless, it had a depressing effect. There were those that believed that the Darnley house was haunted by a bloodthirsty monster. Others were convinced that a homicidal maniac was on the loose. Fear descended on our village. By nightfall, each of us was already indoors, with some kind of weapon within easy reach. The Latimers were so upset that they announced their intent to leave. Alice was but a shadow of her former self. One night, she came perilously close to a nervous breakdown, and Patrick had to summon urgent medical help.
