When I awoke, I stretched my stiff body, accidentally elbowing someone in the face. I tensed. The familiar swaying of the horse was gone, replaced by smooth fabric under my face and heat at my back.

“Shh, it’s me,” Wyatt rumbled, his breath fanning over my neck. “We’re at Brandt’s, in a guest room.”

I turned, pulling my head back to study his eyes. “Where are—”

He cut me off with a quick peck on my lips, and I melted against him. “Alastair and Everett are outside with Brandt and Ayden. I’ve been waiting for you to wake up.”

Sighing, I met his hazel eyes with a sad smile pulling at my lips. “I don’t want to talk about it yet, Wy. I just… I need time. It wasn’t anything that I can’t heal from.”

“What do you need from me?”

His sincerity hummed through our bond, mixing with worry and happiness. I wasn’t feeling the same; I needed affirmations of love, sweet words to ease the mental anguish that was seeping into my mind.

“Something positive to help me wipe away the memories of today,” I mumbled, tucking my head against his chest as he ran soothing fingers up and down my spine.

“Like what, Emelia?” He pulled my head back, eyes intense as he searched my face for an answer.

Instead of speaking, I kissed him, swallowing his groan. Wyatt was great at understanding my needs, and I didn’t want to explain any further. There was no need to tell him my body ached. No reason to point out all the bruising or cuts. He could see the damage, and I knew he’d be gentle with me.

He pushed me to my back, his body weight held up by his right elbow as the fingers of his left hand skimmed the waistline of my pants. I shivered into his touch, snaking my arm around his neck to tug him closer to me.

Deft fingers unbuttoned my shirt, the brief touches lighting my skin on fire. The burning flame between us was intoxicating and soul-shattering. And, damnit, if this man didn’t put his hands on me then I might self-combust.

I needed his reverence and worship, but only after I was skin-to-skin with him. I wanted his warmth, his comfort… His everything.

When I tried to speed him up, he hushed me without real effort, taking his time to properly work me up.

“Be patient, little flame. I don’t plan on sharing your time tonight. I’m going to be a little selfish, so be quiet as well,” he whispered as his index finger landed on my lips.

He leaned up, slowly stripping off his shirt and shoes. I gnawed on my lower lip, wishing he’d speed up his movements. Impatience pulsed through our bond, mostly from me, but I knew he was pacing himself in case I wasn’t ready.

I was fucking ready.

Emotionally, anyway. Physically, I was feeling exhausted from the day's events, but I needed this. I needed to feel Wyatt’s longing and desire. Needed to have it cleanse me of all the discomfort and fear I’d brushed aside.
