Chapter 14

A beautiful morning, and Hebblestone parish church was bustling with people. Set back from the main road, the church was a majestic-looking building, restored and kept pristine by the devoted parish churchgoers. Today in particular, the May weather taking on a balmy summer vibe, it looked lit up in the sunshine. The rays of light shone through the windows, lighting up the coloured glass panels of the ornate windows. Emily stood at the bottom of the path, off to the side of the slow trail of wedding guests, just to take it all in. Geoff’s camera went off behind her. Thank God for Geoff, she thought to herself. Her photographer mate kept her sane on the days when she wasn’t feeling very “yes to the dress”.

‘Gorgeous today, isn’t it?’ he said jovially, laying his camera back against his chest by its strap. ‘I do love weddings here. Nothing like a church wedding in Hebblestone, eh?’

Emily nodded, not taking her eye from the building before her. She’d imagined her own wedding here a half million times, but she knew that Tim wasn’t overly keen on the idea. Well, what he’d actually said was that it was “rather twee” and he didn’t want to break tradition. His family tradition was to go big, it seemed. His parents were married on a cruise liner. Somehow she couldn’t see her mum and dad being cooped up together with another few dozen guests. It was not something she wanted to think about. Besides which, Emily had always hated the thought of cruises. What was so fun about being sat like a sardine in a tin can for weeks on end, looking at nothing but each other and shuffleboard timetables? Nope. Not for her. Tim got seasick anyway, luckily.

They’d figured that one out when they’d tried the pedalos at the local country park. The lifeguard had to fish Tim out after he panicked and fell out of the boat. A duck had flapped its wings in his direction a little too close and that was that. He’d gone arse over tie into the water, and Emily had to be towed back to shore with everyone watching. It was hilarious. Tim was really upset about it. He didn’t like ducks much now. She sent him duck memes when she was bored at work sometimes. She wished they’d just been able to agree on their wedding. It had been a big part of why things had stalled. Their ideas of the big day didn’t match up much beyond the bride and groom, and the guest selection.

‘The bridal car is a few minutes away,’ the vicar could be heard telling some of the wedding party. ‘Please, take your seats inside ready for the service to begin.’ The last of the mingling guests made their way into the building, and Geoff hung back to snap a photo of the bride and her father. She idled long enough for the rest to leave, Geoff and the vicar standing at the church gates to wait for the wedding car.
