Early on the morning of February 7, Sandell took up a P-40 with a new tail assembly. He wanted to test it before anybody flew it into combat. Mechanics watched anxiously as Sandell put the repaired ship through rigid acrobatics. Then he disappeared in the haze. All at once the Tomahawk came plunging into sight. At about 2,500 feet Sandell leveled off and began flipping in a series of slow rolls. Abruptly the ship went into an inverted stall and began a deadly spin. It crashed and only the tail wheel and right wheel could be salvaged.

Neale, a Navy pilot, assumed command of the Adam and Eves. Until now he had been so happy-go-lucky that some of the men had wondered what kind of leader he would be. He took over as if born to command, never asking his men to do anything he wouldn’t. It was a rare mission he didn’t lead. He became so aggressive that he left a fight only when he ran out of fuel or was shot out of action.
