DIRECTIONS

From Gasparilla Island, return to the mainland via the Boca Grande Causeway then turn left on Placida Road (CR 775). Drive about 5 miles to Winchester Boulevard and turn right. Turn right on River Road (CR 777) and follow it to I-75. Go north to I-275 (Exit 228). Cross the Sunshine Skyway bridge ($1.50/ vehicle toll). At the north end of the bridge, take the left lane exit (Exit 17) to the Pinellas Bayway / SR 682. Turn left at the traffic light onto the Bayway. Turn left at the traffic light on SR 679 (signs for Tierra Verde). Continue south to Fort Desoto Park. Along the way you will pass the Tierra Verde (faux) Lighthouse. There are two toll bridges ($0.50 and $0.35) plus an admission fee at the park ($5). Turn right on the main park road (Anderson Boulevard).

If you are taking the ferry to Egmont Key, turn left into the parking lot with signs for “BAY PIER” and “Egmont Key Ferry.” The ferry runs daily, but times change seasonally. Contact Hubbard’s Marina for details (www.hubbardsmarina.com/egmont-key-ferry-cruise/ or 727-398-6577). Roundtrip cost is $25 for adults.

For the best view from land, continue just past the ferry parking lot to signs for “Gulf Pier & Historic Fort” and turn left onto the paved road leading to Fort DeSoto (restored gun batteries and a small museum) and the Gulf Fishing Pier. The Egmont Key Lighthouse is clearly visible a few miles southwest of the pier. The lighthouse is at the north end of the island.
