There was a p.s.

Audie sends her love and is looking forward to seeing you again soon. She’s got the dreaded Alice band and, yeah, hates it.

Bugger it. What had seemed so clear-cut suddenly appeared so much more complicated.

“Well?” Thomas demanded as Arietta bit her lip and stared at him. “Anything to tell me?”

Arietta sighed. “Yes, no, maybe.” More to have something to do with her hands than the need for coffee, she began to fill the coffee pot.

Thomas took it from her firmly, steered her to a chair and pushed her into it. “I don’t think playing with the coffee pot is the answer. Is it a gin and confession time?”

“Probably.”

“Then you work up the courage or the way you need to say whatever it is that has you both looking like you’ve lost a million and found a fiver and I’ll make the drink. What if it isn’t sun over the yardarm time. Let’s live dangerously.” He rummaged in the fridge to find what he needed. “Where’s the lemon?”

“Second drawer where it always is. Next to the limes.”

“Ha, ha, and the oranges. Pimms next time.” That drink was a favourite hot-weather tipple.

“You buy the Pimms then. Talking of living dangerously, shouldn’t you be filming somewhere?”

Thomas glanced up and grinned. “My part finished yesterday. I have a month of lotus eating. I, er, might be going to Hong Kong.”

“To see Jan?” Arietta wondered what the outcome to that meeting would be. If ever two people managed to rub each other the wrong way, without really doing anything, every time they saw each other, it was her brother and her friend. “She never said when she sent me a text saying she hadn’t been invited to the bun feast and make sure I took plenty of pics.”

“She doesn’t know. It’s to see about a TV series.”

Arietta raised her eyebrows. “I can always tell when you’re lying.”

“Half-lying,” he corrected her. “I’ve got the part already, filming starts in a month. I thought I might go out early. And stop changing the subject.”

“Wow, congratulations. What is it?” Arietta took her drink from him. “Should this be fizz?”

“Mystery with a touch of intrigue, with a bit of luck it will fly. Fizz later, once you’ve spilled the beans. Come on, love.” Thomas became serious. “I hate to see my twin and my best mate at odds. I get your vibes and they’re rotten and his temper, which is just as bad. We had one evening out together recently and he growled at everything, drank half a pint and left the rest, ate three mouthfuls of curry, pushed it away and said he wasn’t hungry, and made small talk until it was time to go. With a doggy bag he gave to me. So not like him. Tell big brother all about it. Let me sort things out for my little sis.”

If only he could.

“Even with your big brother magic wand, I don’t think you can work your magic this time,” Arietta said morosely.
