Silicon Valley

Horn had felt the tremors, the concrete floor below him vibrating slightly with the effects of the earthquake. Fortunately, his facility was far enough away from the epicentre that, to him, the disaster would only be experienced by what he saw on the news. It was all a sign that the world was heading towards the brink that had long ago been foreseen.

He couldn’t deny that he was rather looking forward to it.

And it was empowering to know that he was the key to it all. Although many of the events happening in the world that marked the end times were out of his control, Horn’s role in the coming apocalypse was pivotal. There had always been something special about him. Horn had felt it from his earliest days. Even as a child, he didn’t seem to relate to his peers. They had seemed so bland, so lacking in ambition, petty and filled with pointless fears and doubts. Hanging around with rich kids, he had witnessed how most of them had things handed to them, without any comprehension of the way the majority of people on the planet struggled to make ends meet.

That taught him the dangers of greed, and also showed him how mesmerising shiny things were to the human mind.

Horn might well have been chosen, but he had needed to work tirelessly at every stage to keep the imagined future a reality. When you thought about it, growing up in a rich family had as many disadvantages as it did advantages. Whilst it put him on a firm footing to forge forward, it also gave him ample opportunity to reject his calling. That was all part of the test.

With the money he had, Horn could have easily retreated to an island and lived the life of most people’s dreams. That was part of the trial he knew he needed to pass. Whilst Horn had grown up in a home of privilege, he hadn’t let it corrupt him. He knew that wealth, on its own, was a pointless pursuit that turned those who craved it into their own kind of slaves. Instead, he learnt that money was a tool for his greater purpose.

What mattered was the power it could bring.

Horn had also learnt, at a young age, why he was here, the truth blossoming in his head one fateful day. There was no doubt in his mind that he was being guided and shaped, the environment around him manipulated to create the character he needed to be to change the destiny of the planet. In the rare moments when he would reminisce about his life, he could identify the turning points that had been needed to build the intellect and the type of personality willing to sacrifice the lives of billions to fulfil his potential. Every experience was a building block to the creation of the man he was right now. Every failure was a teacher, every setback a moment of growth. Without those lessons, he might have taken a different path, rejecting his calling altogether.
