MY LETTER TO MAYOR STUFFED SHIRT

Dear Mayor Grimley,

With all due respect, I’m emailing you to formally complain about the way you handled the entire grant competition at Applefest.

I feel you could have changed the rules or made an exception for a student attending a school in the district. You had a lot of power over the situation, and you decided to kick out a class of eighth graders who worked really hard on their project.

Whether you are aware of this or not, your action was unfair and, to be honest, racist. The rule excluded a Black student from participating in town events because he didn’t have a Honey Hill address. If you were interested in NOT being racist, you would have made sure the rules were fair to everyone in our community, including the kids who go to school here.

I know it’s too late for this year, but I suggest you consider changing your policies to include students at Honey Hill schools who may not be residents. This will make everyone feel welcome at events like Applefest.

I also think apologizing would go a long way.

Sincerely,

Mary Kate Murphy

Grade 8,

Fisher Middle School
