The Pharisees took Jesus prisoner and after much time finally brought him before a Roman leader named Pontius Pilate. Only Pilate could charge Jesus with a crime punishable by death. Soon the crowd who had cried out, “Hosanna/SAVE US!” to Jesus turned hateful and asked Pilate to put Jesus to death and free an evil man instead. Pilate could not find any reason for Jesus to die. He had done nothing wrong to anyone but the Jews were very angry and the high priest claimed that they had a law against claiming to be the son of God. Jesus knew that he must die on the cross to fulfill God’s promise to free all people from sin. Jesus told Pilate to let it be done.

Barabbas the evil man was set free as the people demanded. Jesus was taken away to be beaten and humiliated until his death outside the city gates.

Arnebeth was along the streets again with a noisy crowd. No longer did they shout, “Hosanna” to Jesus and treat him like a king, the king that he really was…but they spit at him and said mean things to him. He was whipped and hurt as he painfully dragged a large wooden cross or crucifix on his back to a place outside the city gate known as Skull Rock or Golgotha. Arnebeth could not hold back his tears. How could these people not see the wrong they were doing? Why would they not let him go and help him? Jesus fell and was hurt badly. A guard grabbed a man from the crowd. This man was named Simon and he helped Jesus carry the cross to the hilltop where the crucifixion would happen. Pilate ordered a sign to be made that was hung atop Jesus’ cross; it read, “Jesus of Nazareth, The King of the Jews” in Aramaic, Latin and Greek languages so that all who passed on the road by Golgotha would know that Jesus was dead. Jesus’ mother, Mary and many that loved him were there and wept bitterly for him. Jesus prayed to God, out loud for all to hear. This made many very angry and say, “If he is God’s son, then why doesn’t God save him?!” God had a plan for him; Jesus knew God’s plan. Jesus died to take away all our sins so that we could be blameless in God’s eyes; So that we may someday live eternity in Heaven where we can all be free from sin. This would establish a new covenant with all people and God forever.
