Hanna came out of the courthouse with her client. They conferred for a few minutes on the sidewalk about next steps on the case. The judge had ruled in their favor on the motion she had filed in the divorce proceedings for this woman who lived near her on the island, but there was much more ahead.

The woman hugged her and left. Hanna started down the street to her own car and immediately started scanning the area for any sign of Lando Tern. She had to leave her gun with the guard in the courthouse before she could enter, but she had it back in her bag now.

She walked up to her car and grimaced as she looked at the damage to the rear-end. She’d had the car nearly ten years and it almost seemed like part of her. There just never seemed to be any good reason to spend money on a new car even though her former husband could certainly afford it and was always after her to trade in the old Honda. He didn’t think it looked good for her to be driving around town in a late model used car he could barely fit in. Ben always had a nice European sports car of some sort. His last was a Jaguar that had been sold at auction after his death to help pay her bills. The Porsche he had bought for their son, Jonathan, had been spared. She couldn’t bring herself to take away the kid’s pride and joy.

There was no sign of Tern or any other threats. She got in and pulled out into traffic. A couple of miles down the road, she saw the turn to Dugganville and, on a whim, steered the Honda off in that direction. She hadn’t seen Alex’s father or crazy wife, Ella, since the wedding at the beach. She had come to truly love them in these past couple of years, and with her own father so far away in Atlanta, Skipper and Ella Frank were her closest family.

As she drove down the narrow highway out to Dugganville, she thought about her father, Allen Moss. He was still hard at work as senior partner at his law firm in Atlanta. He should have retired years ago. He certainly didn’t need the money and his heart was on its last legs, she feared.

His second wife, Martha, was still a constant thorn in her side. The latest episode with the woman had been a tearful late-night phone call from her complaining about her father’s work schedule and neglect of their marriage... and on and on. Hanna had little patience for the social-climbing, arrogant, self-centered...! She stopped herself and saw her turn coming up ahead.

As she came into town, she saw the looming structure of the fire tower pushing up through the trees. The sad thought of the poor woman who just died there continued to gnaw at her. As she drove by the park, she saw the yellow crime scene tape staked out on the lawn at the base of the tower.
