CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Cameron dug inside her purse for her motel key after Dane dropped her off. She climbed the two steps of her miniature cabin’s porch. The white vapor from her breath lingered in the air as she unlocked the door. She flipped on the lights before stepping inside. After plugging in her phone, she stripped off her clothes.

She stepped under the bathroom’s tiny shower head. The warm water turned a pale orange around her feet after running through her hair from her recent dye job. She closed her eyes and breathed in the steam, trying to remember what life was like before all of this.

But her mind kept returning to John’s crime photos. And what Dane had said about Bethany. Cameron was certain that John had killed her. She found herself shivering and realized the water had run cold. She stepped out of the shower and dried herself with the thin, rough towel that hung on the wall.

When she caught her reflection in the bathroom mirror, she hardly recognized herself. But the color suited her. If she didn’t know better, it could look natural.

She dressed in the warmest clothes she’d packed, wishing she’d come more prepared for the subzero temperatures. She slid her laptop from her bag and opened it atop the tiny desk against the wall. If John had used his life insurance payout to purchase property in the area, he could be in police custody tonight.

Although it wouldn’t give back the lives he’d taken, and her life would still be forever marred by his crimes.

Cameron ran an Internet search for property sales records in Alaska and found the webpage for the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. She clicked through the website until she found a place to search for Alaska property purchases going back to 2001. She typed John’s name into the search bar and selected Southeast Fairbanks County.

A list of results came up, all starting with John, but with different last names. She scrolled through the list. No John Prescott. She widened the search to the entire state. A longer list of Johns with different last names filled her screen. She went through the names again before closing her laptop. Of course John hadn’t purchased property up here in his own name.

Then she remembered what Dane had said about inheriting their lake cabins. John didn’t have any family connections in Alaska, but Miles did. His grandfather had a cabin somewhere in the remote wilderness. Miles’s parents hadn’t wanted it, so his grandfather left it to him. Miles had only spoken of it once, when they were dating. He said he hadn’t been up there since he was a kid.

If John knew about what she’d done to Miles, maybe he also knew about the cabin.

She reopened her laptop and typed Miles’s name in the same search bar she’d searched for John’s. It yielded no results. But Miles didn’t buy the property, he inherited it.

She called the number listed on the website. A woman answered after the second ring.

“Department of Natural Resources, how can I help you?”

“Hi.
