CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“What can we do?” Jarrett asked as panic like he’d never known slammed into him. “We need to go after him!”

“He’s a big boy,” Lina said. “He’ll figure things out.”

“How? He’ll be up against Tommy. And I’m not great at math, but it sounds like Tommy’s One is four times as powerful as one of our Ponies.”

This seemed to get to Lina. “Maybe you’re right.”

“My palm is dead,” Freya said. “And without Malik we can’t recharge.”

“I’ve got plenty of power,” Agnes said. “But once again, I don’t see any land around here. And my power is kind of all about that.”

“Okay, fine, it’s up to me,” Jarrett said. And he was glad. He wanted to take action to help Malik. He wanted to do something.

He moved to the edge of the sub, held his palm close to his mouth, and put out a call: Hi, does anyone have a second? Please, we could really use your help. Our friend is in trouble, and so are yours. Please.

“Jarrett…,” Agnes started to say.

But Jarrett didn’t want to hear her warnings. “Don’t tell me I’m being too polite again!”

“Ha, no,” she said, grinning. “I was going to say I think you might have nailed it.”

And she was right.

Four noses—or were they called beaks?—emerged from the water, followed by four sleek and shiny heads. Dark eyes sparkling with intelligence blinked at them.

“You called dolphins, Jarrett,” Freya said, sounding impressed.

The dolphins floated around the side of the sub, their heads bobbing in the water as they nosed a plastic shovel around their circle playfully. Their blowholes sprayed every few seconds as chirps, whistles, and clicks came from their mouths.

“What are they saying, JarJar?” Agnes asked.

“Oh!” Jarrett realized that he didn’t have his palm to his ear. He raised his hand, and instantly cards flew in the air and a deep, refined voice filled his ears.

“—finally,” the voice was saying. “One of you has developed the ability to speak! Do you know the eons we’ve waited for you to catch up to us?”

“You guys!” Jarrett shouted to his friends. “The dolphins can talk. I mean, really talk!”

“Hey,” another dolphin was saying, and he said a name of one of the others that couldn’t really be translated. It came out like Pdfpks. “Pdfpks, can you believe it? The humans have learned to talk!”

“I always knew they could,” Pdfpks said back, “and no one ever believed me!”

“Aw!” the fourth dolphin said. “They’re kind of cute.”

“Really?” the first dolphin said. “I don’t see it.”

“What are they saying?” Agnes asked Jarrett.

“They’re chitchatting, and they’re draining my Pony,” Jarrett answered.

“You need to get down to business before you run out of power,” Freya said.

“Okay, okay.” Jarrett turned back to the dolphins. “I know we’re super adorable, but we need your help.”

“I didn’t say adorable, let alone super adorable,” the fourth dolphin whistled.

Pdfpks chimed in, “Actually, we have quite a few complaints to launch against you people. Is there someone we can talk to? Like a manager or something? What you’ve been doing to us and this planet is unforgivable.
