3.5 Napoleonic Wars

Unlike various coalition partners, Britain remained at war with France throughout the period of the Napoleonic Wars that fell between 1803 and 1814. Some army and navy records from the era have been digitized, plus there are very detailed websites that focus on individual battles, commanders, vessels and more.

Trafalgar Ancestors, The National Archives

Free National Archives database of more than 18,000 individuals who fought in the Battle of Trafalgar, drawn mainly from ships’ musters. Results include service histories and biographical details, where known. Searching by the name Scott, for example, led to 34-year-old Carlisle-born Andrew Scott, a sailmaker’s mate aboard HMS Victory, who later served on HMS Ocean.

Peninsular Roll Call, Napoleon Series

It was originally compiled by Captain Lionel Challis, who began working on the project soon after the First World War.
