THEY ONLY SPENT ONE night in that foster home. Perhaps it should have been a relief, but it wasn’t.

A familiar banging came at the front door early the following morning. It was followed by Mrs Winchester, mean-faced, opening the bedroom door. “Get up, both of you. The police are here to see you.”

It was a different police officer, one in plain clothing who introduced himself as DI Johnson.

“Nicholas Bailey and Daniel Bailey, you are both under suspicion of unlawfully burying a body and concealing a death. You will be questioned with an appropriate adult, which will most likely be your social worker, and given the opportunity of legal representation. You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence.”

Nicholas turned to Danny. “We didn’t do anything,” he told his brother. “Remember that, no matter what.” He didn’t want Danny to take the fall for this.

They were taken in separate police cars to the station. Nicholas found himself sitting in a cramped room with a table and a handful of chairs that didn’t even match. Was he going to see his brother again?

The social worker, Delia Casey, showed up, but instead of a kind smile and reassurance, the woman could barely meet his eye. Then an older man with a belly like that of a nine-months-pregnant woman, his shirt buttons ready to ping off against the strain, arrived and introduced himself as Nicholas’s solicitor.

Maybe he should have been more worried about himself, but all Nicholas could think about was his brother. Was anyone sitting with him right now, or was he in a room like this, all alone and frightened about what was going to happen to them?

DI Johnson arrived into the room and nodded good morning to the other adults before turning his attention to Nicholas.

“This interview is going to be recorded, Nicholas, okay?”

Nicholas shrugged.

It wasn’t as though he had an actual choice.

Johnson clicked on a recorder and spoke into it. “Detective Inspector Johnson conducting an interview with Nicholas Bailey.” He gave the location of the interview room, who was in attendance, the time and date, then got started. “Nicholas, I want you to remember that we’re all here to help you. From what I’ve gathered so far, you and your brother haven’t had an easy upbringing, and it’s the job of all the people in this room to protect you both.”

Nicholas didn’t say anything.

“Can I get you something to eat or drink? Did you manage to have any breakfast? You must be hungry.”

His stomach rumbled treacherously, but he kept his lips clamped together. All this talk of them protecting him was bullshit. He knew exactly how this worked. They would make out like they were friends, but it was all a trap.

Johnson exhaled a steady breath through his nostrils. “Is that a no, then, Nicholas?” He got no response. “Well, if you change your mind, or you want to take a break, just let us know.
